Boos Building

The Boos Building was designed by a German architect in the urban Shavian Queen Anne Revival style. Built in 1898 of dark red brick, it has an elaborate roofline, its shape giving the appearance of turrets and gables. The first floor originally had arched window and door openings, which can be seen in the photograph at left.

William Boos, a barber by trade, came to Hammond with his family at the end of the nineteenth century. He purchased the land (formerly the location of Frank's Bakery) from Ida Jackson.

Hammond's first telephone service, the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph, opened upstairs in the Boos Building.
