Masonic Lodge Building
The Livingston Lodge #160 Free and Accepted Masons was originally chartered in Springfield, LA, on 12 February 1858. The lodge was named for Livingston Parish
(where Springfield is located) or for the Honorable Edward Livingston, brother to Robert Livingston, minister to France in 1803.
The lodge moved to Ponchatoula in 1862, with William Akers as Master, and it remained there until mid-1889. On 27 July 1889, the lodge met in Hammond at
Johnson's Hall. It appears that the lodge had moved to Hammond without permission, because in October of that year the Grand Master requested an explanation
for the move.
The lodge moved again in 1890, renting space in Mrs Lawson's Hall for $12.00 per year.Minutes from 22 March 1891, indicate that the lodge was meeting above Alfred Jackson's
Jewelry Store on Thomas Street.
Livingston Lodge completed its lodge building at the corner of W Morris and S Cypress in 1906. Lodge officers at this time were Thomas Waterman Cate,
Merrit Miller, and Charles Gilbert "Bert" Baltzell. Dedicated 25 May 1907, the building remains the home of
the lodge today.
