Mondebello Building
As 1960 opens this store is unoccupied. Formerly the Old Rialto Theatre owned by Christine Foltz, the building has been bought and renovated by Tony and Vickie Mondebello to be the Shoppers Shoe Center. It is the first self-service shoe store in Hammond. The Mondebellos promise savings of 10-25% on every purchase. The August 18 Hammond Vindicator reports that thousands of shoes are on open display in the store and that the self-service concept saves money. During the grand opening days August 18-20, every purchase of ladies shoes of $5.85 and higher included a free pair of nylon hose.
